Constructed for TTC's new Bombardier streetcars, the Roncesvalles Carhouse Extension is a state-of-the-art maintenance facility. The extension is a 2,050 sm two-storey addition to the existing TTC Roncesvalles Carhouse on the east side of the existing facility. The two-car-spot, single-bay facilitydesigned to accommodate "prototype" and daily servicing activities on the new Low Floor Light Rail Vehicle (LFLRV) vehicles. A new sophisticated stainless steel piping sand dispensing system was installed to modernize the sand-filling methods for the new LFLRV. The project included sophisticated DC power and control systems to maintain the streetcars.
After the successful completion and operation of the prototype facility, the extension of the existing Carhouse building at Inspection Bay No. 1 and removals, upgrades and modifications to various areas and systems of the existing Carhouse building commenced. In addition to the building modifications, replacement of the existing interior rails on Track 21, 22 and 23 was completed along with special track work replacement for the entire North area of the yard including other related exterior work. All work was completed within an active TTC streetcar maintenance facility.
